Why Don't I?

My husband and I were talking a few nights ago about writing, what I'm working on, what submissions I'm waiting on, etc. etc. and he asked me if I was going to write a suspense book.

Well, specifically he asked if I was going to write a book with a serial killer in it since I'm always watching, "those crime shows."

I've always been afraid of the idea of writing a mystery or suspenseful book because I figured I probably wouldn't get it right. When I told my husband that, he basically said I was crazy. Because I watch "those crime shows" all the time.

He's so right. Why don't I write a mystery and/or romantic suspense? I admit, I have a slightly suspenseful book out on submission right now but it's nothing major. Certainly no serial killers in it.

(My favorite show is Forensic Files)

Why do I love watching shows about serial killers - killers in general? I'm a sick puppy, man. I think Ann Rule is awesome. To have Ted Bundy drop into her lap like that, it just couldn't have worked out any better. I've read almost every book she's written. I love true crime. Both reading it and watching it.

But to be honest? I have no desire to write it.

Do you like watching the crime shows or is it too gruesome? I so love the gruesome. I sometimes worry about myself...

I totally don't like them, only because I read a book to escape, NOT to freak me out. Same for tv shows (why did I when I was sick all weekend watch "ANTM" because I couldn't read?).

I love them. I was watching the detectives shows on Discovery way back before CSI. Now, there's about 4 channels devoted to it (if you have DTV), so you're definitely not alone!

And it's not sick at all. What it is is a mystery. I love anything that involves puzzles and stories about how they're solved. I'm hooked on Mystery Diagnosis now on Discovery Health. Heck, I even loved the show House Detective on HGTV about a property inspector who works to figure out mysteries in homes--like where the water in the basement is coming from. It was one of my favorite HGTV programs! Now THAT'S a sick puppy! LOL!

OMg, Karen, I LOVE Forensic Files! And have you seen MURDER BY THE BOOK? Another True Crime show with Mystery/Suspense authors telling about a horrific crime in their city that inspired one of their books. I totally hooked on the TRU TV network. I agree with Lori that it's the mystery solving but for me, it even more about the PEOPLE. What were their motivations for doing what they did? Why did they think they wouldn't get caught? How could they do that to someone they were married to, lived with, had a relationship with? And the lies they tell and get away with sometimes. It's the human aspect that fascinates me the most.

I love crime shows-- when my oldest was a baby, every time he heard the law and order music he would turn, spellbound, because I had watched it so much when I was pregnant with him (it was on late when I was waiting up for my husband who worked til midnight every day).

And yes, I love writing suspense. My second Single Title, Tie Me Down, features a serial killer-- and he's a doozy. For me, it's like Lori-- I love fitting the pieces of the story together to make all the clues line up. It's great fun, though a lot of work.

Good luck on the book that is out on submission!

Good luck with the book Karen! I love all those Law & Order & CSI shows. I love romantic suspense where they fight crime & terrorism by day & have hot monkey sex at night.

I love true crime, romantic suspense, suspense, CSI, etc. The more gruesome the better, in books or on TV!

Well I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my love for the gruesome! I've watched Murder by the Book - I enjoy it. I enjoy all of the murder shows on Trutv!

I agree with you all about the mystery and the motivation - why do these people snap like they do? I just watched a 48 hours where a woman murdered her husband by stabbing him -- 198 times. WTH!!!! Talk about rage. She claims she was beaten constantly. No one believes her, no one saw evidence. After watching that show, I didn't even know what to think. Sigh...crazy stuff.

I love crime shows! Except I think I have to say goodbye to CSI now that Grissom is gone. I really miss Cold Case Files and American Justice, which used to come on A&E but there are no new episodes now :(

Oh, and my August SRS features a serial killer---it was actually really fun to write. Go for it!

You're right CSI is not the same without Grissom. I did love the part in his last episode when he went to find Sara.

Ah see you're all encouraging me to write about a serial killer! I swear I'm putting it on the back burner and letting it simmer. It's just too tempting...
